 2007 OSCAR TRIVIA TEST:
IT'S ALL RELATIVE

THE FOLLOWING QUESTIONS ALL RELATE TO OSCAR WINNERS AND THEIR RELATIVES.
ANSWERS ARE AT THE BOTTOM OF THE PAGE.

  1. In the Academy Awards for 1941, two sisters competed against each other for Best Actress. Name them and tell us which one won.

  2. Name the only Oscar-winning director to ever direct both his father and his daughter in Oscar-winning performances.

  3. Siblings John Barrymore, Lionel Barrymore and Ethel Barrymore all acted in the same era, but one of them never won an Oscar. Name the unlucky Barrymore.
 4. Name the brother and sister actors who both won Oscars, but only one of them for acting.

 5. True or False: Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward are the only married couple who both won acting Oscars.

 6. Who has the most Best Actor Oscars--father Kirk Douglas or son Michael?

 7. Which of these Oscar-winning actresses also had Oscar-winning fathers: Jane Fonda, Liza Minnelli, Angelina Jolie.

 8. True or False: Husband and wife Richard Burton and Elizabeth Taylor both took home acting Oscars for "Who's Afraid of Virginia Woolf."

 9. True or False: None of the acting Carradine brothers--David, Keith and Robert--ever won an Oscar.

 10. True or False: Ronald Reagan's wife was a movie actress, but, unlike her husband, she at least won an Oscar.

ANSWERS:

1. Joan Fontaine ("Suspicion") beat sister Olivia DeHavilland ("Hold Back the Night").

2. John Huston, who directed father Walter Huston to a supporting Oscar in "Treasure of the Sierra Madre" (1948) and daughter Anjelica Huston to a supporting Oscar in "Prizzi's Honor" (1985).

3. John was the Oscar-free Barrymore. Brother Lionel won Best Actor for "A Free Soul" (1931) and sister Ethel won Best Supporting Actress for "None But the Lonely Heart" (1944).

4. Shirley MacLaine won the Best Actress Oscar for "Terms of Endearment" (1983) and brother Warren, often nominated as an actor, won his Oscar for directing "Reds" in 1981.

5. False. There have been several more. Among them: Vivien Leigh (Best Actress, 1939 and 1951) and Laurence Olivier (Best Actor, 1948).

6. Since Kirk never won an Oscar, Michael's the winner because of his Best Actor Oscar for "Wall Street" (1987).

7. All of them. Fonda's father, Henry, won Best Actor for "On Golden Pond" (1981); Minnelli's father, director Vincente Minnelli, won for "Gigi" (1958) and Jolie's father, actor Jon Voight, won Best Actor for "Coming Home" (1978).

8. False. Taylor got one for Best Actress for that film and Burton was nominated for Best Actor, but didn't win.

9. False. Keith won an Oscar for composing the Best Song of 1975--"I'm Easy," which he sang on screen in "Nashville."

10. True. Now we're not talking about his second wife, former First Lady Nancy Reagan. She was a movie star under the name Nancy Davis, but never even earned an Oscar nomination. However, Reagan's first wife, Jane Wyman, won the 1948 Best Actress Oscar for "Johnny Belinda."
