THE
PLAYER
FIELDED ILLEGALLY
But
a Promising New Wing for the Team!
 |
Warm as late-spring
sun,
Aromas of the grass waft toward us reassuringly,
Prelude to the playing field
Where fleet-foot youngsters infinite in energy
Race past, pursuing rolling orbs,
While flirting with white lines that keep at bay
The cupped-hand coaches shouting counsel and encouragement.
Within
the waves of reds and whites,
A referee---much older, taller, somewhat slower---
Gets a grip upon his tiny weapon,
Whistling law and order while he runs.
He rules supreme above them all
Except for one, down near the goal,
Whos out of proper uniform
In jarring contrast,
Wearing gray and black,
Intently grazing on the turf
And wondering where his clan
Of ravenous migrating geese from Canada has disappeared.
