 ELK
Survival of the ----est

By PAUL HERTELENDY
of TheColumnists.com

Beasts invincible,
Their very size intimidating.
Bellows, buglings
Propagate through seaside meadows,
Warning all to leave this herd alone.
Behemoths,
Rockhard muscles and the five-point antlers
Poking through the sky,
The tule elk are masters of the heath,
A macho rutting male
Subscribing to survival of the fittest
Dominating massive harems.
Meanwhile knots of stags look on with envy,
Plotting how to sneak around the guardian male
And steal affections of a female undetected
To produce an offspring
And assure as well
Survival of the craftiest.

---Elk Preserve,
Pt. Reyes Nat’l Seashore (CA)
