HIGH-RISK OPERATIONS
BY PAUL HERTELENDY
of THECOLUMNISTS.COM
THIS PAGE HAS BEEN POSTED IN ANTISEPTIC WHITE
TO ENHANCE THE CLINICAL ATMOSPHERE OF THIS VERSE
Countering the antiseptic ambiance
Within the operating room
Are dancing, dazzling, sparkling eyes
Of slender, well-scrubbed nurses
Masked in feminine allure mysterious.
Before the anesthesia, patients such as me
--Exhilarated, blown away--
Might broach a later rendezvous,
But at their peril,
Since the icons, once unmasked,
Could prove
A rude awakening.
(With apologies to the priceless, tireless nurses everywhere
who keep us all ticking despite our excesses too often taking us too far in the other direction)
