 VANISHING ACT TO EMULATE

Cave Creek in the Pecos Wilderness of New Mexico

August’s roaring brook is here
And not down there,
Abruptly vanished,
Swallowed up by maw of limestone’s huge black hole,
And left without a babble, gurgle, even bubble.

Just as unexpectedly,
It pours forth far downstream
Refreshed, invigorated, robust in its energy.
Why can’t humans stressed by urban pressures---
You, or I, or all the colleagues---
Likewise disappear, emerging minutes later
Fresh as springtime,
Rid of all the lingering anxieties?
