PAUL HERTELENDY
FLOOD
Noah, Where Are You Now?
The vicious winter rains set creeks to rage
And throw their drenched haymaker punches
Through the hamlet
Till they drowned the main street
Four feet deep.
A week went by, the waters gurgled out
When rains took wing
And nature pulled the stopper. Now, the creek plays possum,
Calmly gliding well below its banks,
As if to enter some preposterous not-guilty plea.Still, the shops of quaint old town stayed closed,
Their keepers in a state of shock
Just short of ruin,
Inquiring where was Noah when most needed. The keepers curse the creek today,
But by the droughts of summer
When the reservoirs run dry
Theyll pray for rain, for flow,
For just some meager bracing spray to stay the heat.
