 LIBERATION BY DIPLOMA

Colors and capers, tassels and streamers,
Gabrieli fanfares, bursts of brass,
Parade of academics, graduation class.
Festive crowds take refuge
From the pelting rain
For celebratory gaudi in a festive vein
With entry of the honored phalanx
Of ebullient grads who'll give their parents thanks
And furnish hope, with school years ending,
That fulfilled are dreams, and ended spending.

Speakers in succession rise, inspire,
Elicit gales of laughter ever higher,
Reminiscing on all-nighters, outings at the beer-halls,
Teamwork projects, fiendish finals,
Words of counsel, words of hard-won insight,
Coeds broaching foresight, rarely hindsight,
Hooded deans--spectacular attire!--
Kaleidoscope contributing to ceremonial fire.

The grad in rippling gown
Is grinning ear-to-ear now
With a radiance like ne'er before,
While parents weep their tears of joy,
And wonder why and how
The crises suddenly are history.
They wonder if the future sunsets will be rosy too.
