 BRAIDED LEASHES

Canine Arts & Crafts:
Naughty Dogs Entwining Knotted Walker

By PAUL HERTELENDY

It’s calumny and fabrication, I insist,
When people claim our dogs
Can’t execute a single trick
Or follow a command.

Absurd! I take them on a walk,
With each one neatly leashed,
The crusty old guy lumbering behind
The stylish bitch with flying ears and leaps
Who smiles for all.

They sniff and stop and smell and trot
And twist and tangle ‘round the tree
Till well before the mailbox
Leashes have been braided
In a picture-perfect pigtail---
The trick to top all tricks of doggiedom.

The walker-optimist anticipates a second trick be done
While homeward bound:
These canine geniuses might dance that minuet, reversed,
Untangling lines and knots
To pristine states,
Extending leashes taut and straight and true
Before the threshhold’s near.

I wish, would that were so!!
