The Brooklyn Dodgers:
Weve Got Their NumbersBy STAN ISAACS
of TheColumnists.comThis tour de force is for baseball numbers freaks, a final blast to the past.
Baseball commissioner Bud Selig put the spotlight on uniform numbers recently when he had the sport celebrate the anniversary of Jackie Robinsons major league debut by ordering all players to wear No. 42, Robinsons number. As a numbers guy of long standing, I take off on that with this exclusive listing of all the numbers that Brooklyn Dodger players wore from the time they started wearing numbers in 1932 to their last year in Brooklyn in 1957.
Because the Dodgers put Brooklyn behind them, this is the definitive Brooklyn Dodgers list. On some subsequent week, I will put together the all- time list of the New York Giants, the other franchise that was left in the dust by the rush to the West Coast by the Dodgers and Giants.
Note that only George Jeffcoat wore No. 42 before Robinson; that Frenchy Bordagaray wore six different numbers; that Ralph Branca switched from his 1951 No. 13 to No. 12 the next year; that Joe Medwick wore No. 7 and the highest number, 77; and that Casey Stengel wore No. 31 and 36 as Dodgers manager, eventually wearing the No. 37 that was retired by the Yankees and Mets.
