 UNNATURAL ACT
Verse in Memory of Sept. 11, 2001

What mad physics is this,
To set motion against matter
And smash strong souls to smithereens?

Flying from Boston to Los Angeles,
You somehow die in New York.
How can that be?

Such motion has no meaning.

Yet here is the autopsy report.
Cause of death: You flew into
Easily avoidable architecture.

You collided with a symbol,
A towering pictogram
Of prideful need and greed.

Surely this act has an antidote,
To de-craze your compass,
To re-morph your mortality?

To suck back the flaming fist of fire
That struck through structure,
Boiling bones and steel?

But no.

Your scattered souls lie low.
Logic hides, all vanished
In bloody ash and smoke.

As we search, staggering,
Through predatory shadows.
Amputated, suffocated,

As if we too had died.
