Several decades ago many of us first became enthralled with the wonders beneath the sea in a series of specials featuring diver and undersea adventurer Jacques-Yves Cousteau.
Now, in a new century, Cousteaus son Jean-Michel and his children, Fabien and Celine, continue the family business, if you will, in a two-part special for PBS, "Jean-Michel Cousteau: Ocean Adventures--Voyage to Kure." It premieres nationally April 5 and 12 at 8 p.m. (Check your local TV guide for exact times and dates in your area.)
The Cousteaus and their team head for the remote northwest Hawaiian island archipelago that ends on the island of Kure. What they find is disheartening. Though thousands of miles from inhabited areas, pollution has tarnished these once pristine areas. Everything from golf balls, toys and cigarette lighters to toothbrushes and fishing nets litter the beaches.
Once again PBS brings us
the underwater world as
seen by a new generation
of the Cousteau family.Pollution, as the program points out, is everywhere and a growing danger to not just
Kure, but to all areas of the planet we inhabit.Though not as a much anticipated event as in past years due to the emergence of more channels offering nature-type programs (the Discovery Networks for example), these new documentaries are still a wonder to watch. Jacques Cousteau would be proud to see that his family is continuing his pioneering explorations in the fascinating world under the seas and on its shores.
A NOTE ABOUT 'FOOTBALLERS' WIVES'
Following right after completion of the current third season, BBC America will be airing the fourth season of the wickedly delicious "Footballers Wives." It will premiere at 10 p.m. Eastern and Pacific on Sunday, April 23, following a marathon of episodes from season three. The season three marathon starts at noon Eastern and 9 a.m. Pacific on the 23rd. (Check local TV guides for exact times and stations in your area,)
